One vision is a fanvid community designed for geeks intelligent, thoughtful fans of the science fiction and fantasy genres who want to share their fan videos, and enter contests. Come one, come all, fans of Douglas Adams, Joss Whedon, Tolkien - which ever universe you love, feel free to share that love here. Please read the rules, which will be edited slowly and in secret by the mod Mercury_phoenix, who cannot abide poor English. Your other mod, frodolyn, cannot spell to save the life of Wash. (Although before you crazed firefly fanatics attack her, believe me, if given the chance, she would have tried damned hard).

So what makes us different from those other vid communities? Well, I haven’t looked at them all, so I can’t guarantee that we’re unique, but here are some key facts:

1. Once a month your co-mods will choose their favorite vid from that timeframe and award it with mods choice. That means the extra-special amazingly talented vidder who has impressed our socks off will get…well, nothing really. The satisfaction of knowing that at least a flower child and a walking ‘fro loved their video. (I suppose I could make a banner, too.)

2. At the beginning of every other month, we’ll post a contest theme. These can range from technique ideas to actual songs. You then have two months to create a video within that theme. At the end of the two months a voting post will be...posted, and members will select the best one. This will then...well, get a banner. (Sensing a theme)

3. Our new challenges are "set" challenges. You choose one of two theme sets and complete vids for each theme. There are no time restraints and anyone can claim anything, but please do claim it at THIS POST (http://community.livejournal.com/sff_vidding/16894.html#cutid1 because I'm lazy with html) so that we know how long it's taken. You will be rewarded with...I bet you can't guess. That's right, a banner!

VID MAKING
1. Clip theft is against the rules, unless a vidder has given expressed permission. Clip theft is frowned upon because in many cases, the thief is stealing not only the original clips, but also ideas. Anyone caught doing this will be shot...er...banned.

Many would argue that all vid making is technically clip theft, as we are taking clips without authorization from shows or movies. Our argument has dissapeared, I'm afraid, because the site I got it from is down. However, we believe that it's just courtesy not to steal clips from other vids. Aside from all of that, the quality of such clips is usually not very good - it's to your own advantage not to steal! We recommend you use DVDX to rip clips. If you wonder what in hell that means, see this tutorial on how to rip clips from DVDS: http://www.livejournal.com/users/mercury_phoenix/14379.html

If you suspect someone of theft, alert a mod discretely rather than pointing at the accused and jumping up and down like a rabid 4-year-old. We'll deal with it (probably by jumping up and down like rabid four year olds, but with mod hats.)

2. Try to watermark vids if you can. This will help us to identify clip-theft, as theft-riddled videos tend to use various sources, and thus, have various watermarks. IF you can't embed a watermark with your program, we suggest using a text overlay to add a letter - perhaps your initials - or a picture. In WMM you can use "add text on selected clip" and add a letter with low opacity (since you can't position the text as freely, having it at a low opacity will keep it from detracting from your vid.) In other programs where you have more control over text, you may want to personalize it a bit more, to make it distinct. Mine is "MP" for mercury phoenix in a red-orange-indigo-navy gradient.

COMMENT RULES

Basic rules apply here. Respect everyone's opinions and ideas, even if you don't agree. Keep it to yourself. Remember not to flame (that is, attack the vidder because you disagree or dislike their vid), and if you have constructive criticism, point out the good aspects as well as the bad. Rasicm, sexism, homophobia, or slander of anyones religion doesn't belong here. One of your mods is a radically liberal hippie, and will not hesitate in banning you if you so much as imply any of the above in your words. She will also recite her countries laws about such things at you until your ears fall off. Don't do it.

Members who do not follow the rules will be banned on a case-by-case basis. In some cases you will be asked to revise your statements, or edit your post. In some, your post will simply be deleted with a message explaining why. In worst case scenarios, you will be chained to Sauron.

POSTING RULES

1. Use youtube, putfile, picafile, or picapic if possible, though megaupload and yousendit are fine. If all else fails, register an account with www.acidplanet.com. When you post your vid, one of the mods will transfer your vid to another source. Also, please remind your audience that, before your vid is uploaded to a public source, they can view it under the account: (email address: sff_vidding@hotmail.com password: 5Hot6ZZ). I really don't give a damn if you break it; it'll be your fun you're ruining, not mine.

2.Post the fandom and title of the vid in the subject line, e.g. : LOTR; Zombie
In fact the ideal post looks like this:

SUBJECT LINE:
Fandom; title. < If you’re entering a bi-monthly contest, please also put ENTRY – contest theme in your subject line >

POST:

Fandom: < what is this video for? Firefly? Star Wars? Lord of the Rings? Anything?! >
Length:
[Error: Irreparable invalid markup ('<how [...] vid?>') in entry. Owner must fix manually. Raw contents below.]

ABOUT THE MODS:

Frodolyn is a <strike> n00b </strike> talented artist and writer. She's a christian who believes that hate is the major failure of humanity. She's open to more different kinds of music than Mercury_Phoenix is, and therefore much less likely to rant on her personal LJ about how evil some of the mainstream stuff is.

Mercury_Phoenix is a <strike> witty, clever, creative, beautiful </strike> very opinionated hippie. She's an atheist, a Sweden-loving leftist, and an environmentalist. She's stuck in the 60's, but dabbles in the 70's and 80's a little; once and a while she even sticks her neck out into the 90;s. She likes her rock and her folk <strike> and her jazz and her blues and her classical and...</strike>; but mostly she's open to anything that is good.
